About this tool

YouTube displays thumbnails at 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9). Cover mode scales the image to fill the frame and crops any overflow, which suits most photos. Fit mode shows the whole image and fills the remaining space with the chosen background color. Stretch forces the image to the exact size and can distort it. The result is drawn on a canvas in the browser and exported as PNG or JPG without uploading the image anywhere.

Common questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be? 1280 × 720 pixels, in a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube recommends JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP under 2 MB, and JPG or PNG are the practical choices for still thumbnails.

Which fit mode should be used? Cover is the safest default because it leaves no empty bars. Use Fit when important detail sits near the edges and would be cropped, and avoid Stretch unless slight distortion is acceptable.

Is the image uploaded? No. The image is read and drawn locally on a canvas. Nothing leaves the browser.

Private by design: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing typed, pasted, or opened here is uploaded, stored, or tracked.
