VTT to SRT converter

Paste or upload a WebVTT file and convert it to SubRip SRT format with corrected timestamps, ready to download.

About this tool

WebVTT and SRT hold the same captions in slightly different packaging. WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header and uses a dot before the milliseconds, and it can carry NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks, cue identifiers and positioning settings after the end time. SRT uses numbered cues and a comma before the milliseconds, and has no header or settings. This converter removes the header and the extra WebVTT blocks, drops cue settings, adds cue numbers in order, and rewrites each timestamp in SRT form. Short WebVTT timestamps written as MM:SS.mmm are expanded to the full HH:MM:SS,mmm shape. Caption text itself, including simple formatting tags such as bold or italic markup, is carried across unchanged.

Common questions

Why do some players reject a renamed .vtt file? Renaming the extension is not a conversion. SRT parsers expect numbered cues and a comma in each timestamp, and they do not expect a WEBVTT header, so a renamed file often loads with no captions at all. This tool rewrites the contents, not just the name.

What happens to NOTE, STYLE and cue settings? They are removed. NOTE comment blocks, STYLE and REGION definitions, and positioning settings after a timestamp have no SRT equivalent, so the output keeps only the timings and the caption text.

Is the caption file uploaded anywhere? No. The conversion happens in the browser on this device, and the download is generated locally.
