Stencil maker

Make a stencil two ways: bold text with cut-out bridges, or a photo reduced to black and white with a threshold slider.

About this tool

A physical stencil needs bridges: small bars of material that hold the inside of enclosed letters (such as O, A and D) in place once the letter is cut out. In text mode this maker draws the word in a heavy font, then draws thin horizontal bars in the background colour across the letters at one or two heights, which is where the bridge material stays when the black areas are cut away. In image mode an uploaded picture is reduced to pure black and white with the threshold slider. The result is a flat PNG pattern for printing and cutting by hand or tracing; it does not produce vector cut paths.

Common questions

Why do the bridge bars cross the whole word? A bar across the full width guarantees every enclosed counter (the hole in O, A, D and similar letters) stays connected to the sheet. Bars can be trimmed by hand after cutting where a letter has no counter.

Can I get this stencil as an SVG or cut file? No. This tool produces a PNG pattern for printing, tracing or cutting by hand. Vectorising a stencil is a separate step.
