Scientific notation converter

Convert a standard number into scientific notation and engineering notation, or convert a coefficient and exponent back into a standard decimal.

Scientific notation to standard number

About this tool

Scientific notation writes a number as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten, which keeps very large and very small values readable. Engineering notation uses the same idea but restricts the exponent to multiples of three, so it lines up with prefixes such as kilo, milli and micro. The reverse conversion multiplies the coefficient by ten raised to the entered exponent. Values are handled as double-precision numbers, so extremely large or small results and numbers with more than about 15 significant digits are limited by double precision and may be rounded.

Common questions

What is the difference between scientific and engineering notation? Scientific notation uses any integer exponent with a coefficient from 1 to just under 10. Engineering notation restricts the exponent to multiples of three and lets the coefficient range from 1 to just under 1000, matching metric prefixes.

What is E notation? E notation is the compact form used by calculators and software, where 1.23e4 means 1.23 times 10 to the power of 4. It carries exactly the same value as the scientific notation shown alongside it.
