The default 238 words per minute reflects a widely cited average for adult silent reading of non-fiction; fiction, technical material and a second language all tend to run slower, which is why slower presets are included. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and narration.
How long does a 10,000-word document take to read? At 238 wpm, about 42 minutes silently, or about 77 minutes read aloud at presentation pace.
Why do estimates differ between calculators? Each calculator assumes a different words-per-minute rate and page size. The assumptions are stated on this page so results can be adjusted.
