Projectile motion calculator

Enter launch speed, launch angle and starting height to get the velocity components, time to apex, maximum height, total flight time and range.

Uses g = 9.81 m/s² and assumes no air resistance.

About this tool

The calculator splits the launch speed into horizontal and vertical components using the launch angle, then applies standard constant-acceleration equations with g = 9.81 m/s². Flight time comes from solving the vertical motion for a landing height of zero, and range is the horizontal component multiplied by that flight time. Air resistance is ignored — stated plainly because real projectiles, especially light or fast ones, travel noticeably less far than this ideal result. Speed can be entered in metres per second or feet per second and is converted before the calculation.

Common questions

Does this calculator include air resistance? No. Results assume no air resistance and g = 9.81 m/s², which is the standard textbook model. Real range is shorter, sometimes substantially for light objects.

Which launch angle gives the longest range? On level ground with no air resistance, 45 degrees gives the maximum range. Launching from a height shifts the best angle slightly below 45 degrees.
