Molarity calculator

Work out moles and molarity from the mass of solute, its molar mass and the volume of solution. Formula: molarity = moles / volume in litres.

About this tool

Molarity is the concentration of a solution expressed as moles of solute per litre of solution. The calculation first divides the mass of solute by its molar mass to get the amount in moles, then divides that amount by the volume of the finished solution in litres. Volume can be entered in litres or millilitres and is converted before the calculation. The volume is the total volume of the solution, not just the volume of solvent added.

Common questions

What is the formula for molarity? Molarity (mol/L) equals moles of solute divided by the volume of solution in litres, and moles equals mass in grams divided by molar mass in grams per mole.

Should the volume be in litres or millilitres? Either can be entered here because the unit can be switched. Millilitres are divided by 1000 before the calculation, since the molarity formula uses litres.
