Meta description checker

Paste meta tags or a page's full HTML source to extract its title, meta description and social tags, with length checks and a list of issues.

About this tool

The title element and the meta description are the two tags that most often become a page's search result heading and snippet, and Open Graph tags control how the page is presented when a link is shared. This checker parses pasted meta tags or a full HTML document, extracts the title, meta description, canonical address, viewport and robots tags, and the basic Open Graph and Twitter card tags, then measures lengths and lists issues: missing tags, a title or description outside the practical length ranges, and missing social tags. Length guidance is a display guideline, not a ranking rule: search engines can rewrite titles and generate their own snippets.

Common questions

Does this checker fetch a page from its URL? No. Nothing is fetched. Paste the meta tags or the full HTML source of a page, and the extraction and checks run on that pasted text in the browser.

How long should a meta description be? Around 120 to 160 characters is a practical range: long enough to summarise the page and include the main topic, short enough to avoid being cut off in most search results. This checker flags descriptions that are missing, under 70 characters, or over 160 characters.

What if there is no meta description? Search engines usually generate a snippet from the page text instead, which may not describe the page well. Adding a description written for that specific page gives more control over the snippet shown.

Private by design: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing typed, pasted, or opened here is uploaded, stored, or tracked. No page is fetched from any website.
