MEMORY_MANAGEMENT — the blue screen, explained and fixed

Windows keeps careful accounts of every page of RAM. This stop code means it checked the books and found them corrupted. The two realistic culprits: the RAM itself is failing, or a driver wrote into memory it didn’t own and trampled the records. Nothing else is common enough to chase first.

The fix, in order

  1. Test the RAM before anything else. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (search “memory diagnostic”, choose “Restart now and check for problems”), or better, MemTest86 from a USB stick overnight. Any error at all = the RAM (or its slot) is faulty — no software fix exists.
  2. If you recently added RAM or enabled an XMP/overclock profile, undo it. Run at base speeds and with one stick at a time to isolate a bad module. Memory that passes at stock speed but fails at XMP is a settings problem, not a Windows problem.
  3. Update drivers — graphics first, then chipset and storage. A driver scribbling outside its allocation produces this exact code, and GPU drivers are the most frequent offenders.
  4. Repair system files: admin Command Prompt → DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow.
  5. Check the drive too with chkdsk /f — the page file lives on it, and a failing drive corrupts memory contents swapped to disk.

If it still happens

If RAM tests clean at stock settings and the crashes continue, note what’s running when it happens — one program’s driver (antivirus and RGB/utility software are repeat offenders) may be the writer. Remove one suspect at a time and test.

Common questions

Can a virus cause MEMORY_MANAGEMENT? Indirectly at most. The overwhelming causes are failing RAM and buggy drivers. Scan if you like, but test the memory first — it settles the question in one run.

It only crashes in one game. Still RAM? Possibly — games push RAM harder than anything else on the PC, so marginal memory fails there first. Run the diagnostic before blaming the game.
