Gravel calculator

Enter the area and gravel depth to get the volume in cubic yards, the weight in tons, and an equivalent bag count.

About this tool

Gravel is usually bought by the ton or cubic yard, not by volume alone, because stone density varies. The calculator works out the volume from area and depth, then converts it with a density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard — a typical figure for crushed stone and pea gravel — which can be edited if a supplier quotes a different density. Depth guidance: 2 to 3 inches for a path topping, 4 to 6 inches total in layers for a driveway over a compacted base.

Common questions

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel? About 1.3 to 1.5 tons for most crushed stone and gravel. This calculator uses 1.4 and lets the figure be changed to match a supplier's material.

Should gravel depth include the base layer? A driveway is usually a coarse base layer plus a finer top layer. Run the calculator once per layer with that layer's depth and add the results.
