Calculate true flight duration from the local departure and arrival times on a ticket, accounting for the time zones at both ends.
Ticket times are local to each airport, so subtracting them directly gives the wrong answer whenever the zones differ. This calculator converts both local date-times to UTC using their IANA time zones, including daylight saving rules for the dates entered, then measures the difference. The result is the scheduled elapsed time between departure and arrival, which can differ from time in the air if a booking includes a layover.
Why does subtracting the ticket times give a different answer? Because the departure time is local to the departure airport and the arrival time is local to the arrival airport. A flight can land at an earlier clock time than it took off when travelling west across zones, while the elapsed time is still several hours.
Does this include a layover? If the arrival entered is the final destination arrival, the result includes any layover between the two times entered. Enter a single leg's departure and arrival for that leg's duration only.
Are daylight saving changes handled? Yes, for the dates entered. The conversion uses the IANA time zone database rules as implemented by the browser, which account for daylight saving on those dates.
