Final grade calculator

Enter the current course grade, the grade to finish with, and how much the final exam counts — the calculator returns the exact score needed on the final.

About this tool

The formula weights the work already done against the final: needed score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. A result above 100 means the target cannot be reached with one final, and a result at or below 0 means the target is already locked in. Letter grades use a standard plus/minus scale and are shown for reference only, since grading scales vary by school.

Common questions

How is the needed final score calculated? The current grade keeps its share of the course (1 minus the final weight), so the final only has to cover the remaining gap to the target. Dividing that gap by the final weight gives the required score.

What if the result is over 100? The target grade is mathematically out of reach even with a perfect final. The table still shows the highest course grade a 100 on the final would produce.

Does this work for a midterm or a single assignment? Yes. Enter the weight of any remaining exam or assignment in place of the final exam weight and the same formula applies.
