About this tool

Scope, stated plainly: this viewer supports the Tajima DST format only. PES, JEF, EXP, XXX and other embroidery formats are not supported and will not open. A DST file has a 512-byte text header followed by 3-byte stitch records; each record encodes a frame move in balanced ternary steps of 0.1 mm (weights 1, 3, 9, 27 and 81), plus jump, colour-change and end flags in the third byte. DST files store no thread colours, so each colour block is drawn in the next colour from a rotating palette purely to make the blocks visible; the palette is not the design thread list. Jump stitches move the frame without a stitch and are not drawn.

Common questions

Why does my PES or JEF file not open? This viewer reads DST only. PES, JEF, EXP and other formats use different structures and are out of scope for this tool; convert the design to DST in embroidery software first.

Why do the colours look wrong? DST files contain no colour information at all, only the points where the thread changes. The viewer cycles a palette so each block is distinguishable; the real threads are chosen on the machine.
