Driving distance calculator

Find the road distance and estimated drive time between two places, with an optional fuel cost estimate.

About this tool

The place names are looked up with OpenStreetMap Nominatim geocoding, then the coordinates are sent to the OSRM routing service, which follows the road network. Results are labelled as road distance and drive time estimates: OSRM assumes free-flowing traffic and posted road conditions, so real journeys affected by traffic, roadworks, ferries or closures will differ. Straight-line distance is always shorter than road distance.

Common questions

Why is the road distance longer than the distance on a map? Roads curve, detour around terrain and water, and route through junctions. The road distance follows that network, while a map measurement is usually a straight line between the two points.

Does the drive time include traffic? No. It is an estimate from the routing service based on the road network and typical speeds, without live traffic, stops, weather or roadworks.

What happens if a place is not found? Add a town, state or country to the name to make it more specific, for example a town name followed by its state or country.

Private by design: this tool makes external calls to calculate a route. The two place names entered are sent to the OpenStreetMap Nominatim geocoding service, and the resulting coordinates are sent to the OSRM routing service. No other data from this page is sent, and nothing is stored or tracked by this site. Do not enter a private address if that disclosure is a concern.
