Cross stitch pattern generator

Open an image, set the width in stitches, and get a symbol chart matched to a limited floss palette, with a stitch-count legend.

About this tool

The generator scales the image to the chosen grid width (height follows the image proportions), averages each cell, and maps it to the nearest of about 24 built-in floss colours, which have generic colour names and hex values only, with no brand names or brand shade numbers. If more colours survive than the selected palette size, the most-used colours are kept and the rest are remapped to the nearest kept colour. Each colour is drawn on the chart with its own symbol so the pattern can be followed without relying on colour alone. Very detailed photos simplify heavily at small grid widths; simple, high-contrast images chart best.

Common questions

Why does my chart not use the full palette size? The palette size is a maximum. If the image only contains a few distinct colours after mapping, the chart uses only those, and the legend lists exactly what is used.

What do the symbols mean? Each symbol stands for one floss colour, listed in the legend with its generic colour name and stitch count. Symbols let the chart be followed in black and white printouts too.
