Color palette extractor

Upload an image and get its six most representative colours as clickable swatches with HEX and RGB values. The photo is analysed locally and never leaves the device.

No image loaded yet. For sampling speed the image is scaled to about 200 pixels wide on a canvas before colours are counted.

About this tool

The extractor draws the image onto a small canvas, scaled to about 200 pixels wide, then groups pixel colours into buckets by rounding each red, green and blue channel. Fully transparent pixels are ignored. The six buckets with the most pixels win, and each swatch shows the average colour of its bucket as a HEX and RGB value. Clicking a swatch copies its HEX value for pasting into a design tool or stylesheet.

Common questions

How are the six colours chosen? Pixel colours are grouped into rounded buckets and the six fullest buckets are shown, using the average colour of each bucket. That favours the dominant colours of the image.

Is the photo uploaded for analysis? No. The image is drawn to a canvas and sampled entirely on the device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or tracked.

Why does the palette miss a small detail colour? A colour covering very few pixels rarely reaches the top six. Cropping the image to the detail before uploading gives that area more weight.
