Caption file generator

Build a caption file line by line: type each line, stamp its start and end times with the elapsed timer helper, and export SRT or WebVTT.

What this tool does and does not do: it builds a caption file from lines typed (or dictated) here, one line at a time, with start and end times. It does not transcribe uploaded video or audio files, and there is no upload field for media.

Elapsed timer helper for stamping caption times while media plays elsewhere.

About this tool

This generator assembles a caption file from lines entered one at a time. Each line needs caption text plus a start and end time, entered as seconds or in HH:MM:SS,mmm form. The elapsed timer helps when captioning media playing on another screen or device: start the timer with the media, then stamp the start and end of each line as it is spoken. Lines are kept in time order and can be deleted before export. The finished set exports as SRT for most editors and platforms, or as WebVTT with its header for HTML5 video. To be clear about scope: this page does not transcribe uploaded video or audio files, and it has no media upload. The only speech input is the optional dictation button described in the privacy note on this page, which is separate from the typing and export functions.

Common questions

Can this transcribe a video or audio file automatically? No. This page does not accept media uploads and does not perform automatic transcription. Captions are built from lines typed here, or from the optional dictation button, which captures one spoken line at a time through the browser.

How does the elapsed timer help? Start the timer at the same moment the media starts playing elsewhere. As each line is spoken, stamp its start and end from the timer, type or dictate the text, and add the line. The stamps use the timer position, so the finished file lines up with the media.

Which format should be downloaded, SRT or VTT? SRT is accepted by most editors, players and upload forms. VTT is the format the HTML5 track element requires, and it is also accepted by many platforms. Both exports contain the same lines and timings.

Private by design: typing, the timer and the SRT and VTT exports run entirely in your browser, and no video or audio file is uploaded or transcribed by this page. One exception: the optional dictation button uses the browser's built-in speech recognition. In Chrome, that speech is processed by the browser maker's speech service rather than on this device, so dictated audio is sent to that service by the browser. Browsers without speech recognition do not show the dictation button, and nothing is dictated unless the button is pressed and microphone permission is granted.
