Conversion happens in two steps: the browser decodes the source file, then the decoded audio is written out as WAV directly, or encoded to MP3 with the lamejs encoder. Because decoding is done by the browser itself, format support follows the browser: MP3, WAV and OGG decode everywhere; M4A/AAC decodes in Safari and Edge but usually not in Chrome or Firefox. Files that cannot be decoded are reported, never silently mangled.
Why did my M4A file fail? Chrome and Firefox cannot decode most M4A/AAC files. Safari or Edge usually can. The file itself is fine — it is a browser codec limit.
Does converting WAV to MP3 lose quality? Yes — MP3 is lossy by design. The 192 kbps setting used here keeps the loss small for speech and general music.
