Model:

The model downloads once and is cached by the browser afterwards. Needs a recent Chrome or Edge (WebGPU). On phones, the Light model is the kinder choice.

Private by design: in on-device mode, the conversation never leaves the device — there is no server in the loop at all. In API-key mode, messages go only to the provider that key belongs to, under that account's own privacy terms.

Honest expectations

On-device models are small. They answer questions, summarise, reword, and brainstorm well. They are not ChatGPT-class: long reasoning, rare facts, and tricky code will show the size difference. The trade is total privacy and zero cost, forever, with no account.

First load is a real download (400 MB – 1 GB depending on the model) — do it on Wi-Fi. After that, the browser cache makes it near-instant.

WebGPU required for on-device mode: current Chrome/Edge on desktop and modern Android. Safari and Firefox support is still arriving; the API-key mode works in every browser.
